Pfeifer batch living - new premises, new ideas, new dreams and the building of our new studio/showroom all in progress for us in 2022…
Pfeifer will be launching their own brand of furniture ‘Batch Living’ coming soon.
In the days leading up to Christmas I went looking through our extensive photo archive. I wanted to make personal ‘photo calendars’ for our children's grand-parents as presents to make up for the fact that we would not be visiting them, yet again this Christmas. Having family in New Zealand and Australia is tough on our children when living in Europe, even before Covid-19 travel bans made it nearly impossible to visit these last couple of years.
This time exactly 10 years ago we were in New Zealand spending the Christmas holiday period with some of Leonhard’s family. Visiting New Zealand for me is always wonderful. It feels like a magical land where the moody beaches merge seamlessly into lush forests.
My favourite place in New Zealand is a black sandy beach that is cornered by a rocky outcrop of lush forest. The beach is vast, and normally empty except for the most impressive collection of driftwood and the odd lone surfer or dog-walker. To top it all off, the beach backs onto a densely forested hillside which has a great cafe and ice-cream shop nestled neatly behind. Bliss.

New Zealand is also home to tiny beach houses called a ‘Bach’. Like most things that are too good to last, these little cabins were not much to look at but had the vista that property developers only dream about. Sadly, they are disappearing but you can still find a good one if you look hard.
The word ‘bach’ (pronounced batch) is a colloquial term for a small beach-side house in New Zealand and is where Leonhard spent most of his summers as a child. Leonhard and I are both from islands, one is big, the other a large cluster; so being by the ocean is where we feel most at home.
So our news for 2022 is the start of something exciting as we have just secured new premises to build and launch our PFEIFER ‘batch living’ furniture.
PFEIFER Batch Living will be how we materialise our dreams of living by the ocean. ‘Adroit’, ‘considered’ and ‘especial’ pieces of furniture produced in small, batched production runs by skilled workshops here in Portugal. Each piece of furniture carefully designed to make your most precious space - your home - extra special.
